The European Union could “act quickly and firmly” against what it calls “unwarranted” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans involved in fighting digital hatred and misinformation, a European Commission spokesperson stated.
European Leaders Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders including Emmanuel Macron accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, after the travel bans were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing US-based technology firms.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”

Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the decision.
The restrictions were imposed this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the EU’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
